During 1904 state elections around Australia, and the swift changes of government at federal level, reflected confusing changes in political alliances and the rapid growth in power of the Australian Labor Party.  This cartoon is also a good example of how a metaphor ("melting pot") and the federated nation's youth — less than four years old — may be presented literally.
