UPDATE, 23 January 2011:
In October 2009, after more
than three years of work on this personal project, I printed a number of
copies of a not-for-sale 52-page sample edition of Popular Stories
Illustrated, and approached various critics, publishers and others
for comment. To say the least, the reaction over the next few months was
less than enthusiastic, for which I take the responsibility.
Unfortunately the response coincided with some months of indifferent
health and a sudden and unwelcome decline in my activities (and income)
as a freelance writer. Thankfully, a year on, things have improved in
both respects - health and self-employment - but the magazine has been
in limbo over that time. A year down the track, at the time of writing
this update, I've decided I can no longer return to, and continue, this
magazine project, certainly in its present guise, if the feedback has
been anything to go by. So it's time to take the hard step, and to post
this message.
