Building an Index and an On-line Database
for Your Publication

WHAT'S SO GREAT ABOUT AN ON-LINE INDEX DATABASE?
OK, we all know this doesn't sound like a very exciting topic! But if you are involved with the publication of a magazine, a quarterly journal, a monthly newsletter or something similar, do you want to make it even more relevant and useful to your existing and potential readers long after each edition's  publication date?
And as readers, when the publications to which we subscribe arrive, do we sit down and read them carefully straight away?  More often we only do a quick browse.  What happens way down the track when we want to return to that item we noticed, or to find articles on a particular topic or theme that are now suddenly relevant? We usually go on a futile search through the back copies, and often can't find what we want.
The answer to these questions is that your publication, whether you edit it, publish it, write it or read it, should be
indexed — every edition, including all your back copies. This means listing the basic details of your publication's contents in an organised, systematic way.  Then the index needs to be placed (and updated for each new edition) on the internet, into an on-line database, and specialised web pages have to be written to display the data.  You can then search the database over the net, which will instantly provide you with all the publication details you are looking for.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
There are various types of on-line databases and the web pages required to search for and to display their contents.  The ISP for this website provides the installed software to run the MySQL database application.  The web pages to display the data results are written in PHP format.  All computers are able to recognise and display PHP pages.

HERE ARE TWO ON-LINE SAMPLES TO TRY OUT:
The first is an indexed database of newspaper reviews of books, films and art exhibitions.  Click here.
The second is an indexed database of journal articles for English teachers.  Click here.
Both are contained on this website.   Note that they are examples only — they can be modified to suit.

DO YOU WANT YOUR PUBLICATION INDEXED?
